The method behind the ledger

How We Reason

Boardbuddyquivar is an independent information site for adult tabletop players who want stronger explanations, not promises of victory.

Start with what the move costs you

Our central question is simple: what useful option disappears when you make this choice? It brings resource management, tactical timing and scoring into the same conversation. A move can be efficient in isolation and still weaken the next turn.

We use a practical, analytical voice. We name the objective, compare credible alternatives, expose an assumption and test a plausible reply. Advice should help a reader reason in a new position rather than memorize an answer that works only once.

Keep three kinds of statement separate

  1. Rules: what a specific game, edition and setup permit. The publisher’s current materials are the starting point.
  2. Heuristics: conditional shortcuts such as protecting scarce access. Useful, but open to exceptions.
  3. Examples: simplified situations that make a trade-off visible. Invented numbers are labelled illustrative, never presented as measured game data.

Our game discussions are selective explanations, not complete rulebooks. Where wording, timing or expansion content could change the answer, check your copy’s rules before relying on a strategic analogy.

Compare demands, not prestige

We compare information, interaction, commitment and conversion. We do not publish fabricated win rates, universal difficulty rankings or claims that one style of game makes its players more intelligent. A game with random draws can demand rigorous reasoning; a game with public information can remain deeply uncertain to the person calculating it.

Game names are used to identify the systems being discussed. Boardbuddyquivar is not affiliated with their designers or publishers, and commentary does not imply endorsement.

Check primary materials

For exact rules, consult your game’s included rulebook and the relevant publisher’s official materials. Useful starting points include Rio Grande Games, Roxley, Lookout Games and Stonemaier Games. These are reference destinations, not a claim that every statement here has been individually endorsed by them.

Community discussion on BoardGameGeek can help locate ambiguities and variant interpretations. Distinguish an official clarification from a persuasive community explanation.

Make corrections specific

If you spot an error, send the page, the statement, the game edition and the relevant official wording or source. A concise reproducible example is more useful than a general disagreement. We do not promise a response time or an official ruling.
